Winter Wildlife Watching
The Oregon coast is an excellent place for wildlife watching, and during your Christmas trip you’re sure to spot a critter or two. December marks whale watching season, and from Cape Kiwanda you can occasionally spot migrating gray whales. Visit the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge to explore their seven habitats and spot a variety of migrating shorebirds and birds of prey. Along the coast, you’ll likely see seals and sea lions, and even have a chance of glimpsing rarer marine creatures during low tides at the tide pools at the base of Cape Kiwanda, like sculpins, starfish, anemones, urchins and more.
Explore the Majestic Cape Kiwanda
The beauty of Cape Kiwanda is right at your fingertips, easily accessible and an icon of the Oregon coast. The cape is home to cliffs, the famous Haystack Rock, and a massive 200-foot-high sand dune that once summited offers amazing views of the area. If you’re looking to explore beyond the town, head north on the Three Capes Scenic Loop. First, you’ll hit Cape Lookout, which extends two miles into the Pacific Ocean and offers tons of hiking and walking trails and more opportunities for whale watching. Further along the drive you’ll find the final cape, Cape Meares, home to a picturesque lighthouse and jaw-dropping sheer seaside cliffs. Once you’ve explored the capes, as a bonus check out Neskowin Beach south of Pacific City, where you can find petrified ancient tree stumps studded along the shore.
